Chinese Ink Painting 'Mackerel 1' - Origional Art Work
This ongoing theme explores Irish food traditions and what nature provides here in Ireland.
One memory that often returns is of mackerel—caught locally and part of everyday life growing up. I remember a moment when our family dog stole fish from a bucket belonging to children fishing off the bridge at Union Hall, the mackerel still flapping as he ran off with them.
There are also quieter memories of neighbours sharing their catches with us, a simple exchange that reflects the community spirit and generosity embedded in coastal life.
These experiences speak to the friendliness of the environment we live in, and the abundance that nature offers so freely here. The shimmering back of the mackerel, in particular, holds a visual beauty that continues to inspire my work—its surface, movement, and colour translating naturally into form and image.
